Q. What's the weather like in Nanaimo?

A. For the most part, Nanaimo's weather is simply delightful, with lovely warm summers, which are very enjoyable due to our oceanside location. Even during the hottest summer days, the evenings are usually most pleasant as the ocean air moderates the climate.
As for the winter weather in Nanaimo, by Canadian standards it hardly seems like winter at all. Few winters ever bring snow which lasts for more than a few days, and a 'cold snap' might even last for a week or two at the most. Nanaimo's idea of a cold snap is two or more days when it actually freezes. However, during the few winter months, it does usually rain, which will bring the response from locals, 'well, at least you don't have to shovel it'!

Q. What are the water conditions like where we fish?

A. The water conditions in the fishing areas around Nanaimo and Gabriola Island are often calm as these waters are protected from wind and sea conditions.

Q. What type of fish can I expect to catch?

A. Fishing in the Gulf Islands and the Strait of Georgia mainly targets Chinook (King) salmon although all five species of pacific salmon are in the area at certain times of year. We can also catch Dungeness crab, prawns and there's always a chance of hooking other tasty species of bottom fish like lingcod, rockfish, flounder or even an octopus.
